Mexico Fast Facts:

Location, Location, Location: Mexico is located in the southern portion of North America, between the United States and Central America. The diverse terrain ranges from rugged mountains to coastal plains to plateaus and deserts.

Government: Mexico is governed as a federal republic with a president and written constitution, organized thirty-one free and sovereign states.

Size Matters: The total land area of Mexico is 1,964,375 sq km, the 16th largest country in the world.

Cities: The national capital and largest city is Mexico City, followed in size by Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla and Toluca.

Did You Know? Drug trafficking and narcotics related activities are of great concern in Mexico, with drug cartels controlling millions of dollars and as many as 100,000 foot soldiers.

Mexico Careers and Employment:

Population:  As of July 2009, Mexico’s population was estimated at 111,211,789,  ranking as the 11th most populous country in the world.

Business Environment:  Mexico was ranked the 56th best country in the world for business in a 2009 ranking.

Top Industries:  In terms of paid jobs, the labor force in 2005 was comprised of services (59%), industry (25.7%) and agriculture (15.1%).

Taxes:  Mexico sanctions a Corporate Income Tax of 28%; an Individual Income Tax of 0-28%; and a Value Added Tax of 15%.

Weather:  Mexico’s climate varies from tropical along the coasts to deserts in the interior.

Education:  The state of Mexico mandates free, compulsory primary education for all children over the age of six. Higher education in Mexico includes universities, technical institutes, teacher-training colleges and technological universities.

Mexico Economics:

In General:  Mexico maintains a free market economy with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that has grown over $1.5 trillion, ranking 11th in the world based on 2008 estimates. Enormous gaps are present between the rich and poor.

Services:  Employing over half of Mexico’s entire workforce, the services sector is led by a thriving tourism industry and a growing financial sector.

Industry:  Trade liberalization has been hugely beneficial to Mexico’s industrial sector, contributing to an increasingly prominent Mexico automobile industry and a large food-processing sector. Pemex is the sixth largest oil producer in the world and the largest company in any industry in Latin America

Agriculture:  The proportion of agriculture in Mexico’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has steadily decreased throughout the 21st century. Nonetheless, leading products include corn, tropical fruits, vegetables and horticulture.

A Closer Look:  Trade with the United States and Canada has nearly tripled since the enactment of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in1994.
